Revision History

November 1, 2004:

We are in the final stages of version 4.00 of Avert II.  Reports to PDF (for webVIEW and distribution), greatly enhanced and reworked Control Valve module, newly designed Bill Of Materials functions, ability to store/load grid column setups, enhanced ASCII Merge, global (across ALL Owners / Plants) find and literally 100's of other enhancements await in 4.00.

November 1, 2003:

We are please to announce the availability of an Oracle version of the program.  Avert does not require middleware like the BDE or ODBC, it merely requires Oracle SQL*Net or Net8 (or newer). Consequently you can deploy Avert without many of the version dependency or configuration problems typically involved with middleware installation.  We are also in the process of creating an Interbase version and a Firebird version.  The Firebird version is a full client-server version of the program based upon the Firebird C/S database engine.  This engine is a freeware product and will, ultimately, be our standard database for Avert.  We are still providing and supporting a BDE (Borland Database Engine) version through 4.xx of Avert at a minimum.

We have also released a on-line read-only viewer of data input into Avert (and Valv-Keep) called webVIEW (for Avert data) and VKViewer (for Valv-Keep data).  We had a tremendous number of user requests for a online viewer for repair facility customers.  And we delivered.  webVIEW is not a statically saved set of HTML pages from Excel or Word, it's a fully interactive, read-only, online (standard IE or Netscape browsers will work fine) web-application.  It allows a repair facility's customers to login and view only the data that belongs to them.  They can setup filters, run analysis and customize their "window" onto their repair data.  Please see: webVIEW for more information.

Important Issue: The Database format has changed! All installations of Avert or Valv-Keep MUST be updated! As well, a conversion process is undertaken upon the first launching of this new version. Once converted, any copy of the program on a network MUST be of this version (or higher)! Ensure ALL nodes on a network have been updated!

To Apply this update: 1) ensure no copy of the program is executing anywhere on the network; 2) update ALL installations of the program on every node on the network; 3) launch ONE node / installation of the program and perform the conversion; 4) all other computers may now be used as usual. Sometimes, the Database Location pointer is reset. If, after launching the program, it appears that the computer has "lost" the data, use the File - Database Location menu command to reset the location to the proper network folder.

New functionality includes: Oracle, Interbase and Firebird versions released; the main repair data now has an additional view method, you can view repair data and, on a 2nd detail grid, you will see the parts listed for that repair.  That is, we've implemented a "master-detail" grid for the repair and it's related parts info.

Fixes and Modifications Include: Made enhancements to the Parts Wizard function (multi-part selections among others); added ability to drop Owner / Plant from line/grid reports; CV distribution issues cleared-up; added:  >, >=, <, <= and <> to the Date Tested filter of the Merge Database command;

There are numerous other feature additions and fixes.  The Oracle version itself required an incredibly lengthy Quality Assurance testing cycle on top of it's man year of development SO we'll let you try the newest versions of the program to see exactly what's changed!

July 31, 2002:

With the development of webVIEW (the on-line viewer) taking most of our development time, we've posted a stable, current release of the program. It's main features include: (The Generic Attachment / CV-ValvScope interface is NOT included in this release)

Added an ASCII Import / Merge so data can be brought into existing entries. The ability to have the "Job Number" be a self-incrementing field. This will allow the program to generate "Job Numbers". The memo fields (Comment, Description, etc.) now have improved user control on how they print in line/grid reports including, multi-line vertical expansion and word-wrap. As well, memo fields now properly display in grids. When adding Parts, the Part Date can now be configured to be today's, the Date Tested or Date Received. Enhanced the GrowthPower import (VKII users only). Enhanced ASCII import/merge to understand a Relief Valve's "valve size". Added an "alternate" image function which allows speedy access to 100+ Meg sized image tables. Added a small Comment field to the images. In RV's and CV's the "Next Inspection Date" can be configured as a "Due Date". This involves the field moving to a different Details location AND it's name being changed. The Report File Viewer can now be launched by double clicking or dragging and dropping a .RPT file. Updated to the latest versions of the Borland Database Engine (5.1) AND the installer (WISE). Cleaned up a problem with the Authorizations and Windows 2000. Cleaned up a line/grid report memory issue in Windows 2000/NT. You can copy data between fields now; if you've got data in one field that you want in a different one, you can now copy data between them. For Valv-Keep II users, there is now an interface with the EVT program / tester. Line / grid reports can now have a separating line between items. In RV's you can trigger the Seal ID field to be a date based field for "Prev Repair Date" as required. Added a "Replace Valve Next Repair" check-off field. As usual, there were several full-page report changes / cleanups. Several small Tank Vent / Rupture Disc changes were made too.

January 3, 2002 (quick New Year Update):

We are still in the final wrap up mode of 3.2. Since the feature list greatly expanded for "3.2" in the fall, we're likely going to change the release number of it when we do release it.

For now, this update represents a "step" until the ValScope command is completed and the "3.5" release is issued.

There are several new features and enhancements including:

Enhancements to the Mean Time Between Failure and Analysis Of Past / Coming Due commands. The addition of a Repair Performed analysis command. JPEG's have been added to the available image formats. The image command has been enhanced to include unique reporting, e-mailing of images and a number of other improvements. A "refresh" and "return to default query" (removes filters and reverts to default sort order) buttons have been added to the Equipment Grid toolbar. More enhancements to the full-page Relief Device reports. Fixed a bug with NT and the Authorization routines. More Tank Vent improvements. In Relief Devices, there is now an available "converted to PSIG" field for the full-page reports. This allows a report to have a pressure in a unit that's NOT PSIG and have it converted and displayed in PSIG too. The update script now looks for an existing install to update over. The Excel data export command was enhanced to allow selected only entries. Rupture Disks have a 2nd burst prerssure and temperature added to them. Internals editing has been enhanced so you can make "global" changes.

There are several other improvements and new features too.

Created an Avert Power Point Presentation, find it here. (1st draft, many more to come.)

August 7, 2001 ("v3.2" final-beta):

Notes on this release:

Installing this release: After you have applied the update, the first time the program is launched you will need an Authorization Code. It is important that from the time you transmit (phone, fax, e-mail) the Site Code (number unique to your installation at that point in time) to us until we respond with an Authorization Code (unique number based upon your unique Site Code) you do NOT close the program. If that is not possible (ie. you'll have to shut down your computer from when you opened the program until we can respond with a Auth Code), then you'll have to wait until such a time that you can do it interactively (ie. voice) OR you can have the computer remain ON until we get a code back to you (fax / e-mail). The installation section of the manual has more details on this.

New functionality includes: Update installations search for an existing installation and default the install path to the existing path. Merge Database implemented; you can now Merge multiple databases into a single database. This benefits anyplace where there is more then 1 site or 1 database OR when repair facilities are sharing data with full-edit capable equipment end users. Full Page Report editing documentation completed, it can be found here. Owner / Plant now has a "tree" view of the data. This is our first "tree-view" of data and we plan on following the O/P implementation with a Test Data tree view in a future release. There is now a "Classic Owner / Plant" for the old-style grid interface and a "Tree" style for the new one. Added web page for data import and export to ERP programs, found here. Added web page for Network Installation and Errors. Changed the Critical Dimension input setup. It can now either be "classic" (ie. 10 min/max and 10 manufacturer inputs) OR 20 min/max inputs. Added Full Authorization (copy-protection) to the program, info. Added FLP (Field Level Protect) option, info. Added a command that allows the assessment of whether or not the state of "Most Recent" entries is valid for all equipment in the database. This command will verify that each and every equipment track (valve) has only ONE Most Recent entry. Merging databases, careless deleting, operating errors, importing and a couple of other things may create equipment items that either do NOT have or have more then 1 Most Recent entry. When adding a Equipment Link, if an item is added from one of our current databases (RV's or CV's) the Equipment Location from the Details is loaded into the Link Item field Link E1 which is renamed Equipment Location. From the main Equipment Grid, when a column header is clicked to (presumably) change the display columns, it now brings up a menu that allows sorting, filtering, finding or display column change. This will allow "I want to find (sort, filter) on this column here (that I'm clicking)" instant functions. This is a real timesaving addition. On full page reports the Plant Area, Account and Universal can now be printed.

Fixes and Modifications Include: Made some more fields in both RV's and CV's user definable. Cleaned up the ordering on the CV details forms. When a file name is being input, the extension will now default as required (Report Viewer Files, Compressed (WinZipped) Databases, etc.). Flyby help added for RV Test info. Tweaked functions relating to "currently in the program" users list. Removed CR-LF's from inclusion in ASCII exports. Added some pressure side Tank Vent received and testing info. More CV field additions and changes & changed reports and details forms to reflect such. Made Tag Number and Equipment Type Read-only in Parts, A/R's and Welds forms. You now must change the Tag Number from the main details form and let it ripple the changes through. Changed the layout of the toolbars, slightly modified the buttons for Adding Repair Entries and Equipment Tracks and changed the double click on grid entry menu for easier use. Made some slight GrowthPower import changes. Enhanced the SampleDatabase supplied with the program. Updated help files to reflect all the changes. Changed all "development" references, logo's, license agreements, contact info, etc. to reflect the purchase of the Avert & Valv-Keep software program from Avert Systems Corp. by Dresser Flow Control. Cleaned up the "user set date format" processing in some sub-reports. File - Database Expand was been tweaked for Read-only .ZIP files. Cleaned up the Merge Equipment Tracks/ Repair Entries form. Can no longer launch a 2nd instance of the program. ASCII Import no longer has a forced " around the field items. CV Details Model Number field is now properly linked to the CV Model Number Database. Added "Turns" to Blow Down Ring (RV's) unit menu. Found and fixed crash when working with Selected Entries and regenerating queries. Clarified the "User Already Logged" message and added help for that condition when launching the program. Quick Filter now allows <>, >, <, >=, and <=.

March 25, 2001:

New program: Report File Viewer.

This program allows the previewing and printing of reports that have been saved to a file in either Avert or Valv-Keep. With this program and a file generated by either Avert or Valv-Keep, anyone can preview and print reports without any dependency on the hardware the report was initially generated with. As well, the Report File viewer does NOT require the BDE (Borland Database Engine), a database from Avert/VK or any other support programs. It has a much, much smaller footprint then either Avert, Valv-Keep or Spy Glass. Avert & VK were also updated at this time with all the required functionality to generate these .RPT files. More information and downloads of the RPV can be found here.

January 15, 2001 (v3.2 pre-release 1):

New functionality includes: Concurrent user counting and tracking which includes logging into the database and the associated commands for removing "dead" users. Spy Glass versions now have proper logo identification in the program. Older program versions will now longer be able to open newer program database formats (this prevents incompatible version from accessing a database). Added a Welding form for tracking any welds that were performed to a piece of equipment. Added reports for the Welds and ensured all commands (Distribute, filter, menus, etc.) "know" of Welds. Added a Weld Wizard to facilitate inputting of Welding information. Added a new report that includes a repair summary AND welds, actions/remarks and parts. Added multi-page traveller for CV's. Reports now can be up to 5 pages in length (previously they were limited to 2 pages) per repair or valve. A "log file" is maintained and contains who logged into and out of the database and when they switched Owners / Plants. Web site has been updated to include some Network Installation issues.

Fixes and Modifications Include: Program startup has details of where it is and what it's doing on the logo screen now. Program has better "is the database in the current format" verification. RV's: Sec I & Steam service, Cold Diff Set Pressure is no longer calculated; many more fields are now user definable; Tank Vents have Vacuum Side as received and tested/set fields added; the Comment & Description fields have been lengthened to 1000 characters. CVs have many modifications to the data fields including: Leakage Class, user definable cost fields, Leakage units, many more fields are now user definable, Bench & Spring range changes, increased the length of all comment type fields, added an Accessories details comment, increased Model Number, Serial Number and Universal 1 to 40 characters AND many other field changes. Added a conversion for old format CV tables. There is now an option to have 10 Crit Dims each for Measured and Manufacturers or 20 Crit Dims for Measured. The "Add" buttons on the Equip List tab were slightly changed to make it clearer what was being added; a Equipment Track or Repair Entry. Speed buttons on Equip List tab were given brief text descriptions. Cleaned up some 1024x768 screen size issues. CV, Weld and Parts tables have either a copy function or convert function for this new version.

August 4, 2000 (v3.2 prerelease 0):

New functionality includes: ASCII Import has been enhanced to allow for importing of historical entries; GrowthPower interface added to Valv-Keep II; Parts table enhanced and the following fields were added: recommended spare, quantity, extended price and extended cost; part table conversion program written and provided to make use of existing data (backup created before conversion); When a price or cost or quantity changes in the Parts form, a re-calc occurs.

Fixes include: ASCII Import, if a date field is not in the YYYY/MM/DD format, it is assumed to be in a MM/DD/YY format and proper translation occurs; Parts and Actions / Remarks now have Forced Input function working; Cleaned up help and wrote new sections for added commands.

June 19, 2000 (v3.17):

New functionality includes: The Distribute, Compress (a Database for backup or transmission to another physical location) and Expand Database Commands are now complete (includes: Help sections and manual updates). These 3 commands allow full data-sharing with users of Spy Glass II or other copies / locations of the program. Some Owner and Plant fields have been added to the Equipment Grid column selections available. A CV Repair Procedure was added. If a new entry is being created, the Next Maint / Test / Inspection dates are checked against the date the entry is being added, if the new entry is before anyone of these dates (ie. in for service before schedule) a warning is issued. A quick filter command to determine what's due for maintenance, testing or inspection in the near (user selected) future has been added. A confirmation of Cancel takes place now when you Cancel out of editing or adding a repair entry / equipment item. A Relief Valve model number comparison chart has been added, this is directly from the old Avert / Valv-Keep program.

Fixes include: The Database Compaction & Fixup program was enhanced from installation procedure to operational functionality, Saving/loading of User-menu error trapping was verified, exporting of Description or Comment fields has been fixed, problem using a User Added Model Number was fixed, issue with metric ASME Capacity units addressed, Cold Diff Set Pressure factors have been adjusted to reflect Farris Engineering's latest correction factors, fixed a data-carry-forward issue with New Valve / Set Pressure Change and Valve Conversion functions in relief devices;

March 24, 2000:

New functionality includes: When editing an empty data field with a menu, the first letter pressed now automatically loads the first menu option that begins with that letter (defeatable in User Preferences - Operation Options menu); Parts Price or Cost (again set in User Pref - Op Options) are now summed when exiting the Parts form and the sum is carried into the proper Details field; Changing a Next Maint / Test / Inspection interval now forces recalculation of the respective date; the date fields now have a user definable (User Pref - Op Options menu) display format (the dates are all still stored and input in a YYYY/MM/DD format); Sort Order form has enhanced functionality; most grids can now directly export into Excel (entire grid contents is now directly dumped into Excel with a single button click, including auto-launching of Excel); added custom import of data into Equipment Links / Loops as per customer requirements; Model Number, Manufacturer and Date Tested added to Quick Filter; RV's Overlap Collar added unit of Notches; Line / Grid reports greatly enhanced, includes: returning to previously selected entry in main grid, include Job Number in header, include Univ1 in header, allows Selected or All In Grid, added a generic footer, updated Help, date on/off switch; when changing Databases, you are no longer required to exit an restart the program; began implementing features to allow for easier NT Terminal Server installations.

Fixes include: If a Cost changes (in the Details form) the Total is recalculated; CV & RV full page reports were enhanced and cleaned up (including: "Page 1 of xxx" printing incorrectly); fresh installs had no columns selected, that has been fixed; report file copy function, if file already exists issues were cleaned up; Crit Dim name of "" (nothing) no longer prints Min/Max beside it; "Sept. 24, 1999 Model Number Database..." error message incorrectly appearing on very few computers;

Jan. 25, 2000:

New functionality includes: Complete Control Valve Full Page reports (including user-editable); CV Parts Wizard functioning; added links to www.avertsystems.com and avert@telusplanet.net to the software; if the Tag Number was "" or "NONE" then a check for existence inside the current Owner and Plant is no longer done (speeds up response time for these often input Tag Numbers); exposed Quality Control / Check List items and Measured Critical Dimensions to the columns selection, global edit, analyze, find, filter and sort by functions; added CV reports to the Reports Copying functions. Installing this update will require you to update your RaveReps folder in your Extras. Both the fixed and user-editable reports files will need to be updated (Control Valve only)!

Fixes include: minor.

Added: A new download that is a database compactor and fixup tool. This tool should be used infrequently (monthly or every two months) to pack the Avert II (VKII) database and can be used to try and fix a corrupt table or index. We strongly suggest that users ALWAYS backup their database before doing either of these 2 functions!

Nov. 1, 1999:

New functionality includes: Enhanced Equipment Links / Loops tables to include more descriptive fields for the equipment in the Link / Loop (as well, there is a 1 time conversion process upon execution of the release); User Preference - Report Options - Large Traveller Boxes function added for larger writing area for codes for traveller report.

Fixes include: Details forms & Large Fonts (Windows setting) glitch; Limit In View - Equip Locn when there is no selected Equipment location glitch.

Sept. 27, 1999:

New functionality includes: Ability to batch (for all or selected equipment, in one step) recalculate Next Maintenance, Test and Inspection Dates based upon current Date Tested and interval AFTER data has been added/edited in each equipment item; Added Taylor 7800, 7900, 8100 & 8200 model series; reworked the "Parts in a Model Number" form and field user-definability; Equipment Location Name & Equipment Link Name are now user definable. As well, we've revised the Help.

Fixes include: issues involving using a "looked-up Model Number".

Sept. 13, 1999:

This release adds two commands that greatly ease and speed up the process of adding new repair entries to existing equipment. They should be reviewed and used by every user.

New functionality includes: Ability to create new repair entries for equipment selected in the grid in a "batch" style (instead of one at a time); added All Selected Entries to the existing Global - Edit All In Grid command (this will allow you to globally edit only the entries you've selected); Analyze now can be limited to Selected Entries; added a new Valve Survey report; added extra Valve Data Sheet and Traveller (single page) reports (so you can have a starting point for any specific reports you wish to create). As well, we've revised the Help and Manual.

Fixes include: repaired a problem with full-page reports using the "Selected Entries" option. Due to enhancement in the full-page reports, installing this update will require you to update your RaveReps folder in your Extras. Both the fixed and user-editable reports files will need to be updated! If you have made any edits to your editable full-page reports, you may want to contact technical support before doing this (403) 261-3931.

Sept. 1, 1999:

This release essentially completes the Relief Devices (relief valves, tank vents and rupture disks) AND adds the database for storing Control Valve repair data.

New functionality includes: Quick Filter enhancements; new Notes report; new Analyze report; addition of all Relief Device calculations (ASME Capacity, Cold Diff Set Press, Blow Down and others); enhanced field name resetting; enhanced model number lookup; revised Control Valve input forms with data storage; disabling automatic model number lookup when inputting data (for slow networks); creating new equipment track from existing repair data (copying data into new equipment); moving equipment tracks between Owner/Plants; added a new Alternate 1 page Traveller report; added a File - Report File Copy Function to aid in the copying (updating) of RAV report files; merge equipment entries / tracks function; ability to select which repair entries to print in full page reports (to go along with printing only the current entry and printing all in grid). As well, we've revised the Help and Manual.

Fixes include: repaired several full-page report glitches; numerous other issues were addressed. Due to enhancement in the full-page reports, installing this update will require you to update your RaveReps folder in your Extras. Both the fixed and user-editable reports files will need to be updated! If you have made any edits to your editable full-page reports, you may want to contact technical support before doing this (403) 261-3931.

June 14, 1999:

A bug in the (1.9x Avert / Valv-Keep) data conversion program was found and fixed. As well, a new program was developed to clean up the problem if you had converted any data using a May 15, 1999 or earlier conversion program. If you have any 1.9x converted data in your new Avert II (Valv-Keep II) database, you should read this and, perhaps, download and execute the CnvFixup.EXE program. All installs (and updates) from this date on have the cleaned-up conversion program plus the CnvFixup.EXE program.

May 13, 1999:

The Avert II (Valv-Keep II) reports update was issued May 13, 1999. This update included: two page reports, editable reports, model number lookup and a number of other new features and a major performance enhancement when printing full-page reports. Installing this update will require you to update your RaveReps folder in your Extras.

JUMP: To Downloads

Updating the RaveReps folder in your Extras.

If we issued an update that effected the full page reports (the Revision History will tell you this), you may have to perform an additional step.

The extra step is:

After updating your computer with the new release, you must copy the contents of the EmptyDB\Extras\RaveReps folder (from your installation path) to your current Extras\RaveReps path.

This process was greatly simplified in the Sept. 1, 1999 release when the program was enhanced with built-in report file copy functionality. To copy the report file(s):

  1. Launch the program (Avert or Valv-Keep)
  2. Click (from the main menu): File - Report File Copying Functions
  3. Check: Fixed and User Editable as required
  4. Click OK to perform the copy

That's it. If you have more then one Extras, you will have to point to each Extras you have and perform the above steps for each.

If you are unsure of how to do this or want help, please call tech support at: (403) 261-3931.
